Live Show Recap: Environmental Portraits

Hey folks, we’re back! This week you get a quick review of the new D850 and most of you fail to meet the show topic of environmental portraits! It’s ok though, we had fun with it.

We start with photo news:

-The D850 is here! And we love it. “Evolutionary, not revolutionary.”

-iOS 11: new format for photos, HEIF

-new iPhones, 8 and X with new photo features

-Sony’s new RX10 Mark IV, Justin made a review of it here

Okay, we get into your photos here:

pianist

-street vendor

photographer

lumberjack or a human muderer?

-girl with horse

-bus driver

Time for some photo inspiration on the topic:

-Arnold Newman, the first to use “environmental portraits”. Learn more about him from our podcast episode here.

Over to me for some questions, sorry about my mic!

-do you keep memory cards forever or retire them? We keep using them unless they fail.

-do environmental portraits need to be candid or posed? Posed! Like traditional portraits.

-where is your go to for fall foliage in Connecticut? Vermont.

Back to photos:

violinist

tractor grandpa

cowboy on a break

surfer

repairman

baller

Back to me with some questions:

-what techniques/gadgets catch your eye for long exposures? Have you used the Pixel Stick? Yes. It should be software based like image averaging.

-thoughts on Chris Nicholls jump at the Nikon event? It was funny, but Chelsea feels bad because it was her idea and he got hurt.

Time for a portfolio review! Greg Heath. Shorten your menu items, pare down duplicate subjects, crop down some of your shots with lots of negative space. Lovely work though!

Now for chit-chat, the part of the show where you say dumb\funny\rude things to us on our videos and we highlight them:

-you guys are aging. “yeah, we’re all aging at about the same pace”

-hey, what are your camera settings for this video? That joke was great the first 200 times.

-nostrils flaring with rage

-nice work, Justin!

-this new presenter is cute (it’s Justin!)

Back to photos:

seamstress maybe?

-“I want to see her in the kitchen-” “you’re so sexist!”

-shirtless welder

-pretty sure she didn’t design the Flatiron building

biker girl

chef

-one of those old-timey village actors

-hard working man

Back to me for your last questions:

-$$$ from Rob Tillitz who loves giving us money. What % of a photographers effort should be spent on branding and marketing? 22-23.5. Hard to say! More than you want it to be.

-do you consider yourselves more technicians or artists, and what percentage of each? Both say more artist than technician. Only 10-15% should be technical unless you’re learning a new style.

A few last photos:

-this weird circuit-board looking thing

-actor or film student

-graffiti artist

performer

comedian

-dry cleaner

And that’s a show! Some of you really nailed it, but we’ll try it again soon. Next week is creative self-portraits, so do something fancy! See you then.

Live Show Recap: Cityscapes

Hey folks! Sorry I didn’t recap last week, I was out of town and didn’t make time.

This week we looked at some lovely cityscape photos.

T&C started out the show with a nice message for hurricane victims and implored you all to donate along with us. You can donate to Red Cross here, or a smaller charity elsewhere.

We won’t have a show next week! The week after that is environmental portraits, so you have two weeks to prepare for that.

Shout out to our dear friend Rod who sent us more whiskey because he’s the absolute best and is committed to keeping us drunk.

News:

-Nikon D850 is out and shipping! You can see our initial review here.

We get into your photos:

-first pick of the night

-I think they forgot that picks are a thing

-“…if you know them, otherwise that’s a creepy thing to do”

idk what to title all these

park

Over to me for some questions and $ comments:

-Eric, Peter, Hillbilly, Jim P. thank you all for your donations!

-what cityscape is on your bucket list? Chelsea would like an Italian city on a cliff, Tony wants to get Chicago.

-what features do you wish camera apps had or would work better? Automatic image transfer, reliability, RAW image transfers.

-Kyle Wolfe! We miss you.

-what’s a good beginner camera for a kid? Smartphone with accessories for video, the Olympus E-M10

Time for chit-chat! The part of the show where you make dumb comments and we highlight them:

-how dare we make a tutorial for a camera that people own even though we don’t like it

-Shame! Shame!

-Tony loves Chelsea because she’s cute AND off her rocker

-our new tag line, “Tony and Chelsea overthinking photography”

-NOT

-best strange hair

-rather have a root canal than watch this

-face of 30 year old, hair of 60 year old

Time for a portfolio review! Anders, great work. Maybe change your logo?

Back to photos:

Firenze

-“I feel bad you don’t care about Duomo trivia”

posts

lightning

-window view

orange

fireworks

balls?

I do have questions!

-should film be taught in high school? Before or after digital? After digital. Learning to shoot is more important than getting into the technical stuff.

-thanks Roger!

-“how am I supposed to shame people into being considerate?”

-what other field would you choose to work in? Tony would be a filmmaker or a teacher, Chelsea would keep doing something in the arts, Justin would do organic chemistry or astronomy, I would be a woodworker. We saw a kid cut off his fingers with a band saw.

-what’s with sports photos so hyper-HDR? Clarity slider to 11.

Back to photos:

-skyline with a dog

-shadow skyline

Boston

-b&w Brooklyn

-“Lightroom’s been such a pain for the last decade or so”

More questions:

-thanks numbers

-if you could pick only one camera, what would it be and why? D850 for Tony. Or a7rIII.

-what music do you listen to? Don’t believe Tony and Chelsea. Chelsea loves almost all music, unless it’s about tractors. Same with Justin, but minus pop-hip-hop. We all love Kendrick Lamar. I like 90’s post-punk, folk, and Lorde. Tony likes pop and 90s rap and country. Justin also likes classical and film scores.

Last batch of photos:

Caleb! Lovely work.

-“people asked if we were twins today, does that creep you out?”

-tilt shift

-eye in the sky

And some last questions from me:

-do you ever hit the shutter count on your camera? What do you do? Throw it away. Jk, it doesn’t matter.

-do you think Nikon will be able to compete with Canon lens-wise? Maybe?

-thanks Rob!!!

-how do you feel about the Note 8 cam? No idea. Tony’s not going back to Android though.

And that’s our show! Be helpful, take care of each other. Again, no show next week but join us in two for environmental portraits.

Live Show Recap: Action

New studio set up! Which means no me this week because we haven’t worked out the bugs yet. Don’t fret, I’ll be back.

Things are looking bluesy this week as we look at your action shots.

Questions from Justin:

Live Show Recap: Contrast

Contrast! You guys took some liberties with this one, but that was expected. We were looking for contrast in color, light, or mood.

Next week is action, so bring it!

We start off with photo news:

-Sony got the a7 SII onto a space station and is taking footage! Tony and Chelsea are repping with their nerd shirts.

-the TSA is getting more thorough with their checking electronics, sign up for precheck

-Nikon announced the D850. Meh. Tony’s real into that liquid crystal.

-Nikon didn’t send us a cake.

Ok, let’s get into your photos:

portrait

-steel on cotton

Over to me for some questions and $$$:

-Roderick, as always

-what is one of the worst things your camera has gone through and survived? Tony left a 5D Mark II outside in the rain overnight. The drones have gone through a lot, like crashing into trees. Drones: “good images, weird experience.”

-British slam! We accept your money comment war.

-does Tony have odd socks? Yes. Like any human being (which he is, we swear.)

-where will the next Wanderlust be? Somewhere in New England!

Over to chit-chat. You know what it is:

-yeah, we have a book

-4 things: Lerman Ber, look him up

-pretty gangster with that GH5 overview

Ok, back to your photos:

 -contrast in the underpass

-contrast in technology

-“that’s a cat”

ferns

-pick for Tony looking like Anderson Cooper. Jk he doesn’t at all.

Over to me for some more questions:

Back to photos:

-woman on a rock

And back to questions:

-‘mo $ ‘mo problems

-is stock photography a big fat waste of time now? Hard to say, we’re not really in it anymore. You can still make money doing it, but not as a primary job probably.

-how hard was your first flash shot and how bad did it turn out? Flash is hard, it takes a lot of practice to get right.

-how hard is it to produce something like Wanderlust? Justin is being humble. It’s a lot of work. Making a story out of footage is the hardest part.

A few last picks:

Krystal, killing it as always

And that’s our show! Next week is action, so get out there.

NASA is not a waste of money. Last word!

Live Show Recap: Abstract and Geometric

Chelsea sasses the old-heads right off the bat. Tony wears cool glasses to assure you he is working on a video about shooting the eclipse.

This week we satisfied Tony’s new obsession by looking at your geometric and abstract photos. There were some great ones!

Next week’s topic is contrast. Contrasting colors, or contrast in mood, or simple contrast in light.

No news this week, except that Tony made Margaritas with lemon.

Ok, let’s get into your photos:

-wait, Ahmed. You got a pick and you were still bugging me all show about why it wasn’t on theme?!

-“I’m gonna give you a pick cause I didn’t know the name of that

-under the clock

-double exposure

flower, or ear canal?

chairs

James! Good one.

Over to me for your questions:

-what’s more satisfying, a great wildlife shot or a really popular YT video? Wildlife, it takes work and focus to capture. YT videos are fleeting.

-Chelsea, what’s your favorite type of photography? Travel.

-what are your favorite shapes, excluding the rhombus? Hexagon, circle. Tony has a nerd answer. Chelsea doesn’t like octagons cause they’re always telling her what to do.

-what are your thoughts on Nikon working on a mirrorless camera? Chelsea’s into it, Tony hopes they don’t introduce a new mount.

-follow my step-son’s YouTube channel (he went from 9 subs to 182 because of you all!)

Ok, time for a portfolio review. Casper Krohn. Change the arrangement of your pricing page. Change the lead photo for your animals. Don’t have a category with only one photo, pare them down and combine them.  Good work, just focus on replacing photos.

Time for chit-chat! Where you say things and we respond.

-Wanderlust, we get it. Tony throws shade on Germany.

-alcohol, the drink of idiots

-oh Amazon reviews

-Tony, the dog whisperer

-Chelsea “Cringy Woman” Northrup

Twitter Q from Justin:

Back to photos:

-happy birthday, Laura

-twisty building

-more shadow stairs

-this makes me think of space

-blue and orange

-favorite current lens and why? Sony 70-200 f/2.8 GM, Canon 500mm f/4 for wildlife, Canon 400 f/5.6 for it’s lightness, Sigma 18-35. Too many to list, depends on what you’re shooting! But their favorite child is Madelyn.

-thanks for $, Connor

-changing the white points messes up skin color, help! Work with your color channels and keep the orange, yellows and reds. Or mask the image first to keep the people out and then adjust the surroundings.

sdp.io/whichcamera, please visit it before asking

-what character would you be from GoT? Arya for Chelsea, Tony would be the dad that got robbed by the Hound, Justin would be the many-faced god, I would choose Arya or Ygritte

Back to photos with this lovely overhead shot of tennis courts:

-“nobody knows what this is, pick

-dang, Stuart

-“oh my god, the earth is flat. Just kidding!”

-everything in America is a baby

-“there are grandmothers who have those little signs right on ’em” and now Chelsea is ded

One last question before we go:

-when you go out to take landscapes of somewhere you’ve never been before, how do you prepare? Google, sun tracker apps.

And that’s our show! Next week’s topic is “contrast” and all that could entail. Thanks!

Live Show Recap: Portraits with Chris Gampat

We had special guest Chris Gampat, The Phoblographer, on our live show this week reviewing your portraits! It was a lot of fun, he was a great addition to the team.

First we find out that he’s an expert in all things film photography, eateries in New York, and camera bags. Also that Chris’ parents were camera bags and he has possibly never met them.

Get our shirts on sale from sdp.io/shirt! (Does not come with Justin)

We also have Stop It coming up this show! A handful of your sent in your worst photos and we get to tear into them.

For film he uses a Fujifilm JW693 film camera with a rangefinder 90mm f/5 lens and the Mamiya RB67 Pro S. Chelsea likes a 70-200 but also the Sigma 24-105. Tony likes the new a9 and the 70-200.

-how much of the portrait subject’s body do you keep in the shot? Depends on the use and your artistic preference! There’s goo discussion of Chris’ Tindr profile.

-(I don’t listen well) can white clothes for a portrait cause a problem? Yes! You get reflection from the surroundings color casting on the face.

Time for Stop It! Where we get to make fun of your pictures which you volunteered to us for this purpose.

Live Show Recap: Abandoned

We’re back! This week’s topic was “abandoned” and it was great. Chelsea keeps repeating things Tony says at the beginning of the show and it cracks me up.

Next week’s topic is “unexpected beauty” which should be fun!

Support us on Patreon! You can vote on the live show topic each week, get videos early, and other perks. Patreon.com/northrup. For $100 you can carry Justin around like a backpack for a day!

First off, photo news:

-FAA regulations, you don’t have to register your drone. “Hi, is this Todd? Did you fly into a bald eagle?”

Time for your photos, I’ll highlight our picks below:

-Chelsea parkour-ed a baby deer over a wall once

-“it’s like us, romance in the madness, amiright?”

windows

left behind

-abandoned photographer

-matte ceiling

-child’s dress

-nobody abandoned that Jordan. “For real? Did god just make this Jordan right now?”

-high dive. “Yeah, this is what they called the killing pool.”

-insane building

-“you don’t know what people are going through, they need that front tire money.” “Maybe that guy took his tire inside with him and died at work” “Way to find the bright side, Chelsea!”

Over to me for your questions:

-ethics of abandoned photos? Are they legal or safe? No and no. Not if you go inside! “You breathe all deep like you want to get asbestos or something.” “Dangit, I gotta find a new husband? I liked that one.” “I’ve done it, but I’m also really cool.”

-photographing sharks from a cage, should I use a selfie stick? Put on a meat suit and get in the water. Shoot from inside the sharks mouth. Sharks have soft rubber teeth. *don’t listen to anything we say. Also, your phone probably isn’t that waterproof. You could use a selfie stick to get yourself and the shark in the shot? Maybe bring a teddy bear for the shark.

GH5 or a7R II for concert photography? a7R II for sure, great low-light capability.

Okay, back to your photos:

-symmetrical abandoned house

-abandoned silo

-peek inside

-stadium seats

-through grass

Back to me for some questions

-do drones qualify for AMA insurance? They don’t know, but yes.

-advice on doing real estate photography professionally? Be social, make connections, befriend realtors.

-have any of us gotten in trouble doing a photo shoot? Tony’s been yelled at my security before, they’ve been kicked out of abandoned buildings. Nothing serious though. Tony being a white man with white hair helps.

Time for a portfolio review! Connor Moriarty. Use a simplified text. Maybe don’t lead with a photo that’s not marketable. Your work is lovely! Maybe fix your pricing page to make it clear which point is which price. Remove any pictures or subjects that won’t get you work. Your work is wonderful though! Just make a few tweaks.

Time for chit-chat! The part of the show where we respond to your dumb or mean comments on our videos.

-no one actually proves our crop factor videos wrong with proof

-most boring couple ever!

-Tony is not a Fuji hater

-down with leaf blowers!

Okay, back to photos:

-don’t abandon your dog!

-Tony never checks his messages anywhere

Back to photos, and some were picked during the comments:

-table in the water?

-“ooh she’s brave! Be careful!”

-“that’s what you do when your homework is just too much”

And that’s our show! Join us next week for the topic “unexpected beauty.”
