Dynamic Range

Dynamic range is the difference between the brightest part of the picture and the darkest part of the picture. If you shoot raw, your camera captures more detail in the highlights and shadows than you can see in the JPG that you might share. For many of us, that extra detail is extremely important, allowing us to show details in bright clouds and brighten up faces that would otherwise be completely lost in shadow.
